Strength is earned, not given, and Jinwoo proves it with every fight.

The final moments of Solo Leveling’s first season showcased Sung Jinwoo acquiring the extraordinary abilities of the Shadow Monarch, allowing him to command an army of shadows created from fallen enemies.

This transformation marked a turning point in his journey, as he gained the capability to battle overwhelming forces without being at a disadvantage.

Initially, Jinwoo struggled to accept this newfound role, hesitating to embrace the power that came with it. However, upon realizing how crucial it would be in his quest for strength, he chose to accept the title.

While the anime adaptation focused on the moment Jinwoo obtained the Shadow Monarch title through the job change quest, the manhwa delves deeper into the connection between him and his evolving powers.

Jinwoo’s Path to Becoming the Shadow Monarch

As the first season of the anime neared its end, Jinwoo took on the ‘Job Change Quest,’ a trial that required him to battle relentless waves of enemies, including the formidable Blood-Red Commander Igris. Through sheer determination and strength, he emerged victorious, leading to his acceptance of the necromancer job title.

Although he was reluctant to claim the title at first, Jinwoo recognized the advantages it provided. What made this moment even more unexpected was the immediate advancement of his class, granting him the title of Shadow Monarch.

With this new class came two distinctive skills: Shadow Extraction, which enabled him to resurrect fallen foes as shadow soldiers, and Shadow Storage, allowing him to store a set number of shadows in his inventory.

As Jinwoo’s power continued to grow with each level gained, so did the strength of his shadow army. The number of soldiers at his disposal increased, along with their effectiveness in battle, making it possible for him to take on entire hordes of enemies without assistance.

His abilities expanded even further as he unlocked two additional skills: Shadow Exchange and Monarch’s Domain. With these new powers, he successfully overpowered formidable opponents, incorporating them into his army of shadows.

The Hidden Truth Behind Sung Jinwoo’s Abilities

For a large portion of Solo Leveling, the true origins of Jinwoo’s powers remained unknown. However, the Double Dungeon arc, spanning chapters 123 to 131 of the manhwa, finally showed the mystery behind the System and the source of his strength.

During this arc, it was disclosed that the System was not a naturally occurring phenomenon but a creation of the Hidden Boss of the Double Dungeon, a being known as the Architect. This entity had meticulously designed the System as a tool to locate a worthy vessel for the original Shadow Monarch, Ashborn.

After an extensive search, the Architect determined that Sung Jinwoo possessed the ideal attributes to inherit Ashborn’s power. However, he initially doubted whether Jinwoo was truly the right candidate to take on the Shadow Monarch’s mantle.

Unlike the Architect, Ashborn recognized something exceptional in Jinwoo—his unwavering survival instinct and repeated defiance of death. It was this remarkable tenacity that convinced Ashborn that Jinwoo was the perfect choice to carry on his legacy.

The System’s True Purpose in Strengthening Jinwoo

Rather than bestowing Ashborn’s power outright, the Architect developed the System in a way that resembled a video game, ensuring Jinwoo’s body would be conditioned over time to withstand the full extent of the Shadow Monarch’s strength.

Each level-up played a crucial role in reshaping Jinwoo’s physical and mental endurance, gradually preparing him to wield his destined power. During this process, he even acquired a second heart belonging to the Shadow Monarch, which enhanced his capabilities and altered his very presence.

It was never a coincidence that Jinwoo became the Shadow Monarch; Ashborn had deliberately chosen him, believing he was the only one capable of handling such immense power.

His decision proved correct, as Jinwoo used his strength to bring an end to the seemingly endless war between the Rulers and the Monarchs, shaping the fate of the world in the process.
