Are Solo Leveling’s Side Stories Being Included in the Anime?

A new Solo Leveling side story is officially in the works.

By the time Solo Leveling Manhwa reached its conclusion in 2021, it had already built an impressive following. News regarding the series remained scarce for nearly a year, apart from the widely known announcement of its anime adaptation.

The passing of its creator further impacted the series’ future. However, fresh updates have now emerged, suggesting that a Solo Leveling side story is currently in development.

The final chapter of Solo Leveling Manhwa was released at the end of 2021, marking the conclusion of an intense and well-loved series. For those unfamiliar, Manhwa is a Korean variation of Manga, differing in style by being fully colored and primarily published online.

Late Illustrator of Solo Leveling Manhwa – DUBU

Jang Seong-rak, better known by his pen name DUBU, served as the illustrator for Solo Leveling and was also the CEO of REDICE Studio, the company responsible for bringing the series to life. His passing on July 23, 2022, was a major loss to the industry.

Despite his integral role, DUBU was not the original creator of Solo Leveling. The series itself is an adaptation of a light novel of the same name. While his artwork played a crucial part in the Manhwa’s popularity, the future of the series now hinges on its continued success.

A-1 Pictures has taken on the task of adapting Solo Leveling into an anime. Despite some recent controversies regarding localization choices and the studio’s mixed reputation, fans remain eager to see how the adaptation will come to play.

Side Story

Shifting focus to the latest development, a new expansion of the Solo Leveling universe has been confirmed. A spin-off series is in the works and is set to be a major project as the franchise prepares for a revival in 2023.

This upcoming side story serves as both a tribute to the late illustrator and a strategic move to build excitement for the anime. The decision to release it ahead of the anime’s debut is largely tied to this purpose.

REDICE Studio, the company founded by DUBU, is overseeing the production of this side story. It is scheduled for release in the summer of 2023, with speculation pointing toward a launch date near July 23, aligning with the first anniversary of DUBU’s passing.

Currently, the project is being referred to as the Solo Leveling Side Story. Since its primary function is to generate anticipation for the anime, there are two possible directions for its content. One approach could be an entirely original storyline.

Given that Solo Leveling Manhwa is an adaptation of a light novel, there are existing side stories in the novel that were not incorporated into the Manhwa.

The side story could follow one of these, or it may take an entirely new direction, separate from the original novel. Since DUBU was responsible for illustrating rather than writing the series, a fresh, original side story could be created as a tribute to his contributions.

A compelling idea was shared by Reddit user TheFlipFlopDragon, suggesting a side story that follows a “day in the life” of various shadow soldiers such as Igris, Beru, Tusk, Bellion, Tank, Iron, or even Greed.

Reflecting on DUBU’s impact, co-creator Chugong and the REDICE team expressed their admiration, stating, “Dubu was a leader, a teacher, and a pioneer of painting.

He is a person that is respected by everyone who has worked with him. He has also left many outstanding students including us while running his companies and studios.”

This statement serves as a heartfelt acknowledgment of his legacy, ensuring that his contributions remain influential in the ever-evolving world of media.

A Solo Leveling Game Might Be in the Future

Another exciting prospect for Solo Leveling fans is the development of a mobile game by the renowned Netmarble Studios. While details remain limited, early looks of gameplay and the developers’ assurances have been enough to generate enthusiasm within the community. Many are hopeful that the game will live up to expectations and become a major success.
